Oceanography: Courses and Career

Oceanography, also known as oceanology, is the study of the physical and the biological aspects of the ocean. The professionals who are specialised in the field are called oceanographers.

Oceanography has many disciplines.

  • Physical Oceanography or marine physics, studies the ocean's physical attributes including temperature-salinity structure, mixing, surface waves, internal waves, surface tides, internal tides, and currents.
  • Chemical Oceanography the study of the chemistry of the ocean.
  • Biological Oceanography deals with the ecology of marine organisms in the context of the physical, chemical, and geological characteristics of their ocean environment and the biology of individual marine organisms.
  • Geological Oceanography or marine geology, is the study of the geology of the ocean floor including plate tectonics and paleoceanography.

To become an oceanographer, one require a Master of Science (M.Sc.) or a doctoral degree (PhD) in oceanography, marine biology, biochemistry or hydrogeology.
Oceanography covers a wide range of topics, including marine life and ecosystems, ocean circulation, plate tectonics and the geology of the sea floor, and the chemical and physical properties of the ocean. Just as there are many specialties within the medical field, there are many disciplines within oceanography.
